Holy smokes, the frequent temperature changes here are driving me nuts. About this time of year we should be in the mid-90s daily. It took forever to warm up this year and last weekend the temperatures soared to 102 degrees! Come Monday though, the temperatures began to drop again. It was 89 on Monday, then down from there. It’s only going to be 72 degrees today. Some might consider that to be good but to me it’s still too chilly. The winds picked up yesterday too and the winds ranged somewhere between 30 and 40 mph. It’s supposed to be windy today as well. I want my 90 degree days back!
The temperature changes have been hard on the animals here too. As for pets, we only have the three cats and one horse now. When it’s hot, the cats are outside most of the time. When it’s chilly, the cats move back inside and sleep on any spare bed they can find.
Last Saturday after I got home from my daughter’s soccer games I turned the sprinklers on for the back yard. Those sprinkles also hit the plants in pots on the patio and they get a cooling sprinkle too. It had been over 100 all day so the watering was needed. After I turned off the lawn sprinklers I noticed something different in one of the larger pots on the patio. It seems that Spunky the cat also noticed that the soil in the pots had gotten watered and was a cooler place to lay.
Spunky looked at me as if to say, “What? I like it here!” Spunky turned her back on me and went back to sleep.
Oh, we also got another critter for the place. It wasn’t by choice though. My daughter brought over four roosters from our friend’s barn. They have several chickens over there and too many roosters. Every once in awhile she’ll gather some of the “ugly” roosters and drop them off along the road to fend for themselves. This time she brought four of them to our place.
I walked with her down the hill to release the roosters over the fence. We both knew that eventually they’d become food for the wild coyotes, foxes and the occassional bobcat.
All four roosters came back over the fence and hung out on our property though. Sure enough though, that same afternoon two of them mysteriously disappeared.
The next day I asked my husband where he had seen the roosters and he pointed out that one was just down in the lower pasture towards a corner. I went to look over the fence and see a rooster being chased by what I thought was a cat. Looking closer, I realized it was a fox chasing the rooster. Soon the fox was the proud owner of food to take down to it’s den to feed the young.
One of the roosters has been wise enough to survive up near the house though. It’s taken me several tries to get a photo of it. The rooser always runs off when he sees me. He’s getting used to us though and doesn’t run as much.
He’s welcome to stay but it’s an adjustment to be waking every morning to his crowing!
