Last night a 5.6 earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay area. That’s a good earthquake but wasn’t strong enough to cause major damage. The only things reported were swinging chandeliers and a broken window or two.
The earthquake wasn’t felt up where we live. Being in the foothills has it’s advantages, earthquakes don’t make in past the hills.
I remember when I was pregnant with our first child 35 years ago and we lived in the Sacramento area. An earthquake struck while I was napping and I felt the ground move. It’s an erie feeling to feel the rolling too. That earthquake was probably about 6.0 in magnitude, I don’t remember the exact level.
The Loma Prieta earthquake that hit the Bay Area in 1989 was a 7.1 magnitude. That one did some major damage especially in the city of Oakland, California. Again it wasn’t felt up in the foothills.
I figure that one of these days we’ll have beach front property if the western coast of California drops into the ocean. All joking aside, you never know when an earthquake will strike or how much damage it will cause. Scientists have been working on predicting earthquakes but I don’t know if it’s possible. When the earth decides to shake, there’s no way to tell when or where it’s shaking next.
We’re pretty safe up in this area, I can’t remember any earthquake activity in the years we’ve lived here but it’s not out of possibility either.
I was just researching the Loma Prieta earthquake and it happened on October 17th, 1989. The same time of year. I wonder if I looked back in time to see when most earthquakes hit if it’s the same time of year?
All this talk of shaking reminds me that I need to get moving on finishing clearing out one of the spare bedrooms. I made pretty good progress right after I retired but things are still piled up in there. It just needs to be organized better. I’ll have to label the boxes of past years bills and statements and take them out to the shed for another few years until they can be safely thrown away.
There’s still a few boxes of photographs up there too. Organizing is not a favorite thing to do which is why I try to keep organized all the time. Some things just pile up though.
Ok, shaking out, have a good day!
Oh yeah, Happy Halloween!
